Lance Inc. was started in 1913 by Phillip L. Lance in Charlotte, NC. In 1916, with his wife and daughter, he began offering roasted peanuts and hand-packed peanut butter spread on crackers for customers to sample. This led to the first packaged peanut butter cracker sandwich.
